Breed history in brief

The Slovak Wirehaired Pointer, originally from Czechoslovakia, is a relatively new breed of dog in the United States. It emerged in the late 1950s after World War II by selectively crossing the Weimaraner, the German Wirehaired Pointer and the Cesky Fousek. The goal was to create a versatile hunting dog with exceptional scenting abilities, a harsh coat and a solid build. Although still a relatively rare breed outside its country of origin, it has gained popularity worldwide thanks to its outstanding hunting abilities and loyal temperament.

Breed characteristics

The Slovak Wirehaired Pointer is a noble looking dog. Its head is long and slender, with almond-shaped eyes and intelligent expression. The ears have rounded tips and the tail, set high, is carried downwards at rest and horizontally in activity. The breed's coat is double, with a short, fine undercoat and a hard, smooth, longer outer coat. The hairs under the muzzle are longer and softer, forming a distinctive beard. The base color of the coat is sand shaded with chestnut, with lighter or darker variations. The Slovak Wirehaired Pointer is characterized by being obedient and easy to train. This breed has a natural predisposition to follow instructions and is noted for its intelligence and cooperation. They are willing to learn and work as a team, which makes them excel in activities such as hunting, tracking and obedience trials. They are friendly and affectionate with their owners, forming strong family bonds.

Common health problems

The Slovak Wirehaired Braque breed is characterized by good health. However, they are prone to develop certain disorders or pathologies such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, allergies and gastric volvulus dilatation.
