Breed history in brief

Stray dogs in India are the result of generations of free and uncontrolled breeding between dogs of different breeds and unknown ancestry. Throughout history, stray dogs have played an important role in Indian society. They have been loyal companions, guardians of homes and property, and in many cases, have been part of the daily life of communities. However, they have also faced challenges due to lack of veterinary care, neglect and negligent treatment.

Breed characteristics

Stray dogs in India can have a wide variety of appearances and physical characteristics, as their genetic makeup is the result of crossbreeding between different breeds and lineages. The shape and position of the tail, eyes and ears can be diverse. Some dogs may have long, erect tails, while others may have short or bent tails. The same is true of the ears, which may be erect or drooping. The eyes are usually expressive and of various colors, such as brown, amber or green. The type of coat can also vary, being short, long or of medium length, and generally adapted to withstand local climatic conditions. As for colors, they can present a wide range, including shades of black, brown, white, brindle or a combination of these. In terms of temperament, Indian Stray Dogs are generally adaptive, resilient and able to survive in diverse environments. Many of them exhibit a friendly and sociable nature, having developed interaction skills with humans and other animals in their life on the street. However, individual temperament can vary considerably, depending on their personal history and experiences.

Common health problems

Due to their genetic nature coming from a great diversity of dog breeds, there is not enough knowledge about which are the most common diseases that such dogs can suffer from. However, given their lifestyle, they are more likely to suffer from parvovirus, canine distemper, leptospirosis, ticks, fleas and mange.
