Village Dog Fiji

The Fijian Stray is a breed of dog without a defined breed found in the Fiji Islands. These dogs are the result of crossbreeding between different breeds over time and exhibit varied appearance and characteristics.

General details

Being stray dogs and of mixed origin, their weight, height and life expectancy can vary considerably. In general, they tend to be medium to large in size, with a weight that can range from 15 to 30 kg, and a height at the withers of approximately 45 to 60 cm. Their average life expectancy can be around 10 to 15 years. They are not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

Breed history in brief

The Fijian Stray refers to dogs found in the wild on the islands of Fiji in the South Pacific. There is no documented history of their origin and evolution, as they are a stray dog population that has emerged over time from crosses between different breeds introduced to the region. These dogs have evolved in an uncontrolled environment and their ancestry is varied, being a combination of introduced breeds and native dogs. In Fiji, stray dogs play an important role in local society, as they have adapted to life in communities and are often considered part of the urban and rural landscape. Although they have no documented history or significant influence on the development of specific breeds, these dogs play a vital role as loyal companions and guardians in the communities where they are found.

Breed characteristics

These dogs are usually of medium size, with a body structure adapted to their environment and lifestyle. As for their tail, it can be of variable length and shape, as they do not have a specific distinguishing characteristic in this aspect. Eyes and ears may also vary in shape and size, as they reflect the diversity of breeds that may be present in their genetic makeup. The type of coat may vary, from short and coarse to long and dense, depending on the combination of breeds present in their ancestry. Characteristic colors may also vary, including a wide range of shades and patterns. In terms of temperament, Fiji mutts tend to be adaptable, intelligent and survivors, enabling them to function in their environment and relate to people. Their temperament will depend on their individual experience and socialization, as well as the interactions they have had with humans and other animals.

Common health problems

Due to their genetic nature coming from a great diversity of dog breeds, there is not enough knowledge about what are the most common diseases these dogs can suffer from. However, given their lifestyle, these dogs are more likely to suffer from parvovirus, canine distemper, leptospirosis, ticks, fleas and mange.
