Breed history in brief

The Thai Ridgeback is an ancient breed of dog originating from Thailand, whose history dates back to about 360 years ago according to archaeological documents. This breed was used for hunting and as a guard dog in the eastern region of Thailand. Due to limited opportunities to interbreed with other breeds due to poor transportation systems in the area, the Thai Ridgeback remained unchanged for many years. As selective breeding and official breed recognition developed, the Thai Ridgeback has gained international recognition for its worth as a working dog and for its loyalty. Although its exact origins are difficult to trace, its legacy as a working dog in Thailand and its ability to adapt to its environment make it a valuable and unique breed.

Breed characteristics

The Thai Ridgeback is a medium-sized dog with a distinctive feature: a protuberance on the back. The eyes are medium-sized, almond-shaped and dark in color. The ears, located on both sides of the skull, are preferably medium-sized and triangular, erect and slightly tilted forward. The tail is carried vertically or slightly curved. The coat is short and smooth in general, but is distinguished by the "protrusion" on its back and loin, formed by hairs growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. The coat color can be solid in shades of red, black, blue and light brown, and a black mask is preferred on red-coated specimens. The Thai Ridgeback is a dog of strong and active temperament, showing a remarkable ability to jump. It is a family dog that forms strong bonds with its family and is known to be extremely loyal. Although he can be a protective dog, he can also be friendly and affectionate with those he knows and trusts.

Like other dog breeds, the Thai Ridgeback may be predisposed to certain diseases or health conditions. Some of the conditions that have been observed most frequently in this breed include hip dysplasia, volvulo-gastric dilatation, cataract, distichiasis and atopic dermatitis.
