Taigan Dog

The Taigan is a hunting dog originating from Central Asia, known for its slender and elegant appearance, as well as its friendly nature and strong hunting instinct.

General details

The breed has a medium size, with a height ranging between 60 and 70 centimeters, and a weight varying between 25 and 33 kilograms. Its life expectancy is 11 to 18 years. The breed is not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

Breed history in brief

The Taigan is an ancient breed of dog mentioned in Tibetan, Chinese and Kyrgyz legends. It joined the Kyrgyz tribal peoples and was used for hunting. In the Tien Shan Mountains, they lived for centuries and contributed to the breeding of different breeds. Although the USSR registered them in the 1930s, the breed standard was established in 1964. During World War II, their development stopped, but in 1995 a new standard was adopted in Kyrgyzstan. Today, Taigans are still popular among hunters in their country of origin.

The Taigan is a breed characterized by a slender and well-proportioned body. They have a long wedge-shaped head. Their eyes are oval and brown in color, and the ears are droopy and close to the head. The forelegs are long and slender and the tail is slender and saber-shaped. The coat is long and smooth, and is usually black, black and white, gray and pale shades. The Taigan is a dog with hunting instincts, but does not show aggression towards humans. They are compatible with other dogs in the same household and establish strong connections with their owners. The breed has a high energy level, so regular walks are recommended.

Common health problems

In the Taigan breed, some common diseases have been observed, such as cataracts, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and heart disease.
