The Swedish Vallhund is a medium-sized dog breed originating from Sweden. It is a robust, agile dog with a friendly temperament. Its appearance is similar to that of a Corgi, with an elongated body, erect ears and curled tail.
General details
It is a medium-sized breed of dog. Males have an average weight of 13 to 16 kilograms, while females weigh 11 to 14 kilograms. In terms of height, males measure around 33 to 35 centimeters, while females have a height of 31 to 33 centimeters. Their average life expectancy is 12 to 15 years. In addition, they belong to Group 5 of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which groups Spitz and Primitive type dogs.
Breed history in brief
It is a breed originating in Sweden that has a long history as a herding dog. It is believed to have originated more than a thousand years ago, being used by the Vikings to guard and guide livestock in the Västergötland regions.
The breed was on the verge of extinction in the early 20th century due to the declining demand for herding dogs. However, thanks to the efforts of enthusiastic breeders, the Swedish Vallhund was saved from extinction and its popularity has been increasing in recent decades.
Breed characteristics
Its body is compact and well muscled, with short but strong legs. The head is proportional to the body, with a flat skull and erect triangular ears. Its eyes are medium sized and expressive. One of the most distinctive features of the Swedish Vallhund is its tail, which is naturally short or absent from birth.
The coat is dense, weather-resistant and of medium length. In addition, a light undercoat may be present. The most common color is sable, which varies from light to dark tones, with a wide range of shades between the two extremes.
In terms of character, the Swedish Vallhund is known to be intelligent, active and alert. They are brave and loyal dogs, with a strong protective instinct towards their family. They are very sociable and get along well with children and other animals if properly socialized from an early age.
Common health problems
The Swedish Vallhund, with optimal care and attention, can enjoy a long healthy life, although it is predisposed to certain health problems. Among the most common diseases or disorders are hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, Willebrand's disease and thyroid disease.
