Silken Windhound

The Silken Windhound is an elegant breed originating in the United States. They are small to medium sized dogs, with a silky coat and an athletic appearance. In addition, they are characterized by their strong prey instinct in the field, but also by their gentleness and loyalty at home.

The breed is of medium size, with a height varying between 46 and 60 centimeters. Males can weigh between 15 and 25 kg, while females range between 10 and 20 kg. Their life expectancy is 12 to 16 years. The breed is not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

Breed history in brief

The Silken Windhound breed was created by Francie Stull, a Borzois breeder, seeking to develop a smaller sized greyhound with exceptional temperament, good health and sporting abilities. By combining lines of Borzois, Whippets and Whippets-based crossbreds, she was able to establish a new breed. Silken Windhounds are noted for their versatility, elegance and adaptability both in the show ring and in sporting activities. Over the years, this breed has gained recognition and has expanded internationally, being appreciated for its affectionate and confident personality.

Breed characteristics

The Silken Windhound is an elegant small to medium sized greyhound with a balanced build, a well sculpted head and large dark eyes. His ears are small and can be folded or erect. Its tail is long and flexible, curving gently. The coat is soft and silky, without being woolly or too long. It may be straight, slightly wavy or curly, with longer feathering on the back of the forearms, chest, hindquarters, around the neck and tail. According to the standard set by the United Kennel Club (UKC), all colors and markings are acceptable. The Silken Windhound is a dog of balanced temperament and highly intelligent. It shows a strong prey instinct in the field, but in the home it behaves as an affectionate and devoted companion. He is friendly, gentle and gets along well with children and other animals.

Common health problems

Information on the most common diseases in the Silken Windhound breed is limited. Even so, it is likely to be predisposed to some of the more common disorders in dogs such as hip dysplasia, von Willebrand's disease, cataracts and corneal dystrophy.
