Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a large, muscular breed of dog, originally from Germany. It is a versatile working dog that has historically been used as a sheepdog and guard dog.

General details

The Rottweiler is a medium to large breed. Adult males have a height of 61 to 68 cm at the withers, while females measure 56 to 63 cm. In terms of weight, males weigh 50 to 60 kg, while females weigh 35 to 48 kg. Their life expectancy is approximately 8 to 10 years and they belong to Group 2 of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which groups together Pinscher and Schnauzer type dogs, Molossers, mountain dogs and Swiss Cattle Dogs.

Breed history in brief

It is believed that their origin dates back to the Roman Empire, where they were used as herding and working dogs. Their name comes from the German town of Rottweil, where they were used to guard livestock and pull butchers' carts. Over the centuries, the Rottweiler has earned a reputation as a versatile and courageous working dog. During the Middle Ages, they were used as guardians of property and flocks, as well as for traction work. In the 19th century, the advent of the railroad led to a decline in demand for working dogs, which endangered the breed's existence. However, passionate breeders managed to preserve it and promote its usefulness in new roles, such as search and rescue dogs, service dogs and working dogs in the police and military.

Breed characteristics

The Rottweiler is a robust and powerful breed of dog. Its eyes are almond-shaped, dark brown and medium in size. The ears are pendulous and triangular, and the tail may hang down when the dog is at rest or rise with a slight curve when in motion. The Rottweiler's coat is short, dense and rough-textured. It is easy to care for and does not require excessive brushing. Its coat color is black with well-defined brown to red markings on the muzzle, cheeks, eyes, throat, chest, legs and base of the tail. The temperament of the Rottweiler is characterized by being friendly, devoted, obedient and docile. It is a self-confident and well-balanced dog, showing great attention to its environment. With proper socialization, it becomes a loyal and protective companion, capable of performing a variety of roles with confidence and reliability.

Common health problems

The Rottweiler breed is characterized by good health. However, they are prone to develop certain disorders or pathologies such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cardiac problems, volvulo-gastric dilatation, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy, osteosarcoma, neuroaxonal dystrophy, entropion and subaortic stenosis. In addition to the aforementioned conditions, the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) recommends evaluating juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy.
