Breed history in brief

Its origin is believed to date back to dogs brought to South Africa by European settlers in the 17th century. These dogs were crossed with the indigenous breeds of the region, resulting in a new breed with a distinctive "crest" on its back. The Rhodesian Crested dog was originally bred by the Khoikhoi and Bantu tribes in South Africa to assist in hunting large predators, such as lions and leopards. Their bravery, endurance and tracking ability made them excellent hunting companions. Over time, the breed was perfected by European settlers, who selected dogs with the desired characteristics, such as the crest on the back, short coat and physical endurance. During the 20th century, Rhodesian Crested Dogs became popular throughout the world. Today, the Rhodesian Crested is prized as both a companion dog and a working dog.

Breed characteristics

The Rhodesian Crested Dog has an athletic and muscular appearance. Its head is broad and flat, with moderately large ears that droop sideways. However, the most distinctive feature of this breed is the ridge on its back, formed by a line of hair that grows in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. The coat is short and dense, easy to care for. Its characteristic color is a reddish or wheaten tone, with a black mask on the face. Some dogs may have a small amount of white on the chest and toes. The temperament of the Rhodesian Crested is characterized by its majesty and intelligence. It is a balanced dog, showing confidence in itself and its environment. His ability to make cautious decisions and his adaptability make him a loyal and confident companion.
