The Pug, also known as "Carlino or Doguillo", is a small and distinctive looking dog breed. Its wrinkled face, compact body and curled tail are iconic characteristics of the breed.
General details
Pugs have an average weight between 6 and 8 kilograms. In terms of height, they usually measure around 25 to 30 centimeters at the withers. This breed generally lives between 12 and 15 years. According to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) classification, the Pug belongs to Group 9, which includes companion dogs.
Breed history in brief
It is believed to have originated in China around the 16th century, where it was bred and worshipped by Chinese nobility. For centuries, Pugs were considered status symbols and loyal companions in the imperial court. Throughout history, Pugs have spread beyond China, reaching Europe in the 16th century thanks to trade and maritime expeditions. In Europe, the breed became very popular and was widely bred and appreciated for its distinctive appearance and charming personality.
In the 18th century, Pugs gained even more popularity in the United Kingdom thanks to British royalty. Queen Victoria was a lover of Pugs and had a significant influence on the breeding and development of the breed. During this era, Pugs became the companion dogs of the aristocracy and were frequently depicted in artwork and photographs of the time.
Breed characteristics
Its unique appearance, with its round head, wrinkled muzzle and large, dark eyes, makes it an iconic and popular pet dog. The ears are thin and small, and there are two varieties: "rose ears" fold back, while "button ears" fold forward. The tail curls over the hip.
The Pug's coat is short, soft and dense. The most common color is beige or fawn, although black and silver Pugs are also found. Some specimens may have a black facial mask or a black stripe on the back.
Their friendly and affectionate character makes them excellent companions for people of all ages. In addition, they are intelligent, cheerful dogs with a balanced temperament.
Common health problems
The Pug breed is characterized by good health. However, they are prone to develop certain disorders or pathologies such as respiratory diseases, retinal dysplasia, cataracts, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, degenerative valve disease and dilated cardiomyopathy.
In addition to the above conditions, the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) recommends a cardiac and eye screening examination (annually), as well as a series of tests to assess patellar luxation, encephalitis, elbow dysplasia, pyruvate kinase deficiency, tracheal hypoplasia and bile acid levels.
