Portuguese Podengo

The Portuguese Warren Hound is a primitive type of dog originating in Portugal. It is known for its agile and athletic morphology, its large erect ears and its energetic and alert temperament. It is an excellent hunter and a brave companion.

General details

There are three varieties of Portuguese Warren Hound depending on size and weight. The small variety measures between 20 and 30 centimeters, and weighs between 4 and 6 kilograms. The medium variety weighs between 16 and 20 kilograms and measures between 40 and 54 centimeters. Finally, the large variety weighs between 20 and 30 kilograms and measures between 55 and 70 centimeters. Its life expectancy is 10 to 15 years. The Portuguese Warren Hound belongs to Group 5 of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which includes Spitz-type and primitive-type dogs.

Breed characteristics

The Portuguese Warren Hound has a head proportionate to the body, with a slightly domed skull and a sharp muzzle. Their ears are large, erect and pointed, giving them an alert and attentive appearance. The eyes are oval and expressive, and the coloring ranges from honey to brown. As for their coat, there are two varieties: short or long. The short coat is smooth and shiny, while the long coat is rougher and denser. The short coat is more abundant than the long coat. In terms of coloration, they can be found in a wide range of shades, ranging from yellow to fawn, with or without white patches, or white with yellow or fawn patches. As for the temperament of the Portuguese Warren Hound, they are brave, energetic and full of life. They are natural hunters and have great agility and endurance. They are intelligent and stand out for their ability to learn, although they can be independent and stubborn at times. Their protective nature makes them good guardians of the home.

Common health problems

Information on the most common diseases in the Portuguese Warren Hound breed is limited. Even so, it is likely to be predisposed to some of the more common disorders in dogs such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, periodontal disease, cataracts and skin allergies.
