Breed history in brief
The Picardy Shepherd is an ancient breed dating back to the 9th century. Its origin cannot be defined exactly, but it is believed to come from the region of Picardy (as its name indicates), in the north of France. It was originally developed to guide and protect livestock in harsh climatic conditions. The breed is related to other shepherd dogs of France such as the Beauceron or the Briard.
Throughout history, it has overcome several challenges, including possible extinction during the two World Wars. Nevertheless, the breed's loyal followers have strived for its preservation and promotion. Today, it is not a very common breed, despite showing great versatility in performing a variety of tasks, from herding dog to search and rescue dog to loyal family companion.
Breed characteristics
The Picardy Shepherd has a body slightly longer than its height, and normally, females are slightly longer than males. The eyes are oval, medium sized and dark in color. The ears are high set, erect and of medium size. The tail is long, at rest it is carried low, with a slight curve towards the end. If the dog is in motion the tail can be raised, but never resting on the back.
The coat is double, the outer coat is rough and moderately long (5-6 cm). The undercoat is fine and dense. In the facial region, the length of the coat creates well marked eyebrows and a moderate beard and mustache, as well as a slight ruff in the neck area. The color can be fawn, brindle, fawn with a dark outer coat or fawn combined with a dark rim on the outer edge of the ears and a grayish background on the head and body.
Picardy Shepherds are highly intelligent with an outstanding work ethic and a balanced temperament. The breed is versatile, independent and self-confident. They are energetic in nature, so they require daily activity and adequate mental stimulation to avoid the occurrence of destructive behaviors. They are also loyal and friendly dogs.
Common health problems
The breed is generally healthy, although as with all breeds, it is likely to be predisposed to some disorders or diseases. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) recommends screening for hip or elbow dysplasia, autoimmune thyroiditis, eye and heart problems.
