The Hellenic Hound, a medium-sized breed originating in Greece, dates back thousands of years and is believed to be descended from the Laconikoi Kynes, hounds indigenous to southern Greece. Its history is intertwined with ancient Greek culture, mentioned in ancient writings and used for centuries to track hares and other small game in the Greek mountains and forests. Although popular in its country of origin, it is considered a rare breed in other parts of the world. The Hellenic Hound was recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1996 and by the United Kennel Club in 2006.

Breed characteristics

The breed is distinguished by its strength, with a body that is 10% longer than it is tall. It has an elongated, straight back, complemented by a short but robust and arched loin. Its elongated head exhibits a slightly flat skull and cheerful, generally brown eyes. The ears, of medium length, have rounded extremities and hang naturally. The tail, set high, tapers towards the tip, adopting a saber shape when in motion. Its limbs are muscular and straight. It has a dense, short, smooth and slightly harsh coat, with a characteristic black and tan color. This breed is known for its extroverted and energetic nature, noted for its keen hunting instinct. The Hellenic Hound is loyal and protective, requiring a firm leader in the household to maintain a balanced behavior, as well as a high dose of physical and mental exercise.

Common health problems

The Hellenic Hound, with optimal care and attention, can enjoy a long healthy life, although it is predisposed to certain health problems. Among the most common diseases or disorders are hip and elbow dysplasia and ear infections.
