Breed history in brief

This breed of dog originated in Sweden. It is thought to be descended from Eastern European hounds that came to Sweden by troops returning home between the 17th and 18th centuries. Kennel Club accepted the breed standard in 1920, but 10 years later they considered that it should be combined with the yellow variety of Smålandsstövare. Subsequently, they declared the Gotlandsstövare breed part of the Hamiltonstövare breed. These dogs have existed mainly in Gotland and the breed has been bred mainly for hare and fox hunting and not for standardized appearance.

Breed characteristics

The size of this animal is medium with a sleek and muscular appearance. Its ears are triangular, large and droopy, while its eyes are dark brown. The coat type of this animal is smooth and short. The colors they comprise are yellow or reddish yellow with white markings on the nose, chest and paws. The temperament of these animals is friendly and cheerful. They are dogs with hunting abilities, especially for hares and foxes, but also sweet and noble which makes them good family pets. Because of this strong instinct and desire to hunt it is beneficial for them to have long sessions in the forest and field to exercise and stimulate mentally.

Common health problems

Information on the most common diseases in the Gotlandsstövare breed is very limited. Even so, it is likely to be predisposed to some of the most common disorders in dogs such as hip dysplasia, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy and epilepsy.
