Goldendoodle are very intelligent, sweet and playful dogs. They are also known to be sociable with humans and dogs, and their appearance is adorable.
General details
The breed is classified into three varieties according to size. The miniature variety weighs between 7 and 16 kg and measures between 33 and 50 cm. The small standard Goldendoodle measures 43 to 50 cm and weighs 18 to 23 kg. Finally, the large standard weighs between 23 and 40 kg and measures from 50 to 60 cm. The life expectancy of the breed is 12 to 14 years. * This breed is not recognized by the International Canine Federation (FCI) and is not currently considered a purebred breed. Several canine associations classify it as a mixed breed or hybrid breed. It originates from the cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever.
Breed history in brief
This dog breed appears as a cross between Golden Retriever and Poodle to combine the positive characteristics of these two breeds. They were first bred in the late 1990s.
Thanks to their intelligence and gentle temperament they are good as guide, therapy and service dogs. These service dog tasks include scenting, companionship for hospital patients or patients with anxiety problems. All these characteristics make them very good dogs for social relationships, but not so good for other tasks such as guard dogs.
Breed characteristics
The Goldendoodle is a breed of dog characterized by a well-proportioned, rectangular-shaped head with medium-sized, expressive eyes. Its ears are of medium size and fall to the sides of the head. The Goldendoodle's tail is long and carried straight or slightly curved.The texture of its coat changes depending on its parentage, with some having a longer wavy coat and others more curly. The usual colors are black, brown, honey cream and reddish tones.The temperament of these animals is very gentle which makes them good as family dogs. They are also very intelligent and this allows them to be trained for tasks such as companion dogs for sick people or scenting tasks.
Common health problems
Information on the most common diseases in the Goldendoodle breed is very limited. Even so, it is likely to be predisposed to some of the most common disorders in dogs such as hip dysplasia, atopic dermatitis, retinal atrophy, von Willebrand's disease, patellar luxation and hypothyroidism.
