Breed history in brief

The Fila Brasileiro is a breed originating in Brazil, where it was used for hunting large animals such as jaguars, as well as for tracking and protecting livestock. They were also popular as guard dogs on plantations and as protectors of their owners. Although the breed was recognized by the FCI in 1960 and gained popularity in Brazil and Europe, the desire to cross it with other large breeds led to a significant reduction in purebred specimens. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of dedicated breeders like Dr. Paulo, the breed has been maintained. Today, the Fila Brasileiro is still used for hunting and protection, although some countries have laws that prohibit or restrict the possession of the breed due to its inclusion in the category of potentially dangerous breeds.

Breed characteristics

The Fila Brasileiro is a dog breed of imposing and muscular appearance, with a body slightly longer than tall. Its large head is one of its most notable features, with a broad muzzle and powerful jaw. The eyes have a sad expression and the large ears are V-shaped and may hang sideways or fold back. The skin on the trunk is thick and loose, especially on the neck, where a pronounced dewlap is formed. The coat of the Fila Brasileiro is short, dense and smooth in texture. Coat color can range from brindle to black or fawn, and white markings can sometimes be found on the feet, chest and tail tip, as well as a black mask. The breed is known for being loyal, protective and courageous. They are calm, self-confident and territorial dogs. In addition, they show great devotion to their family and are especially protective of them. They adapt easily to new environments, however, they are wary of strangers and other dogs, so it is important to socialize them properly from an early age.

Common health problems

Information on the most common diseases in the Fila Brasileiro breed is limited. Even so, it is likely to be predisposed to some of the most common disorders in dogs such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, volvulus-gastric dilatation, entropion and ectropion.
