The English Bulldog is a breed originating in England. They are known for their large, rounded head, heavy, sturdy body and short, wrinkled coat. They are affectionate, friendly and calm dogs, making them popular companion pets for families.
General details
The English Bulldog is a medium-sized dog breed, weighing between 20 and 25 kilos and measuring between 31 and 40 centimeters at shoulder height. Its average life expectancy is 8 to 10 years. According to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), it belongs to Group 2, which includes Pinscher and Schnauzer type dogs, Molossoids, mountain type dogs and Swiss Cattle Dogs.
Breed history in brief
The English Bulldog originated in England in the 17th century as a breed of dog for bull fighting. The first record of the name was around 1500, in a letter requesting dogs for the control of fighting cattle. For centuries, Bulldogs were selectively bred to have a muscular body and strong jaw, which allowed them to control and subdue bulls. In the old days they were more similar to today's Boxer than to the stockier, smaller build of today.
Eventually, bull fighting was banned and the English Bulldog became a popular companion breed, but not without first going through a stage where their numbers dwindled due to lack of usefulness. Breeders' selection focused on developing a friendly, calm personality and characteristic appearance.
Breed characteristics
The English Bulldog is a robust, muscular-bodied breed with a large, broad head and a strong, prominent jaw. Its eyes are round and dark and its ears are small and droopy. It has a characteristic wrinkled skin and a short, flattened muzzle.
They have a short, dense coat, soft to the touch, which can be of different colors, such as fawn, white, brindle and black, among others. The color patterns are brindle, pinto and white, red, fawn or solid fallow.
They are docile, gentle and reliable dogs. It is a good dog to live with people and is very affectionate with children. In exceptional cases it can be aggressive with unknown dogs. They are calm animals that prefer to avoid notable efforts, so it is advisable not to subject them to intense or long exercise routines.
Common health problems
Like all dog breeds, the English Bulldog is susceptible to certain health problems. Some of the most common health problems in the breed include obstructive brachiocephalic airway syndrome, cherry eye and keratoconjunctivitis.
In addition to the above conditions, the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) recommends a cardiac and eye screening exam (starting at 2 years of age), as well as a series of tests to assess the following conditions: patellar luxation, tracheal hypoplasia, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, autoimmune thyroiditis, congenital deafness and hyperuricosuria.
