Breed history in brief

The Cairn Terrier originated in the Scottish Highlands in the 17th century, where they were used to hunt and flush small animals, such as foxes and badgers, out of their burrows. They were also used as guard dogs on farms, and their small size and fearless personality made them ideal for these tasks. It was bred in conjunction with Scottish and West Highland White Terriers until the early 1900s, when the breeding of the three breeds became independent. Due to the more striking colors of the other two breeds, the Cairn Terrier did not enjoy the same popularity as its companions. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1913 and has since become a pet and companion dog in many parts of the world.
