Brazilian Terrier

The Brazilian Terrier is a small, energetic breed of dog originating in Brazil. They are known for their short, dense coat, which can vary in color from black, brown, white and gray to beige. They are very active and loyal dogs.

General details

The Brazilian Terrier is a small and muscular dog breed. They usually weigh between 5 and 10 kilos and measure between 25 and 35 cm at shoulder height. They have a life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years with proper care. According to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), they belong to Group 3, which includes Terriers.

Breed history in brief

Although there is debate about its past, the common point is that it comes from breeds of European Terriers that had been brought to Brazil during the colonial era. Possibly the main ones were the Spanish and Portuguese Terriers, the Brazilian being very similar to the Andalusian Bodeguero Buzzard. Later, already in Brazil, breeders would train and select them to hunt rodents and other small animals. Nowadays they are also used as companion dogs, although they keep their instincts developed and are very active animals.

Breed characteristics

The Brazilian Terrier is a small and robust dog breed. They have a muscular and compact body, with dark, expressive eyes and small, erect ears. Their coat is short, smooth and fine, although not soft to the touch. It is always tricolor, usually white, black and tan or tan. They can have other colors such as blue, beige or brown. The Brazilian Terrier is a very energetic and cheerful dog. It is an affectionate dog with the family, but distrustful with strangers. It requires training from a young age and proper socialization. Its strong and independent character makes it have little patience for conflict, and it could bite children if it feels bothered.

Common health problems

Like all dog breeds, the Brazilian Terrier is susceptible to certain health problems. Some of the most common health problems in the breed include epilepsy, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and mucopolysaccharidosis VII.
