Breed history in brief
The Bohemian Shepherd Dog is a relatively unknown breed that developed in the 14th century in the Czech Republic. This breed arose to meet the need for a loyal, courageous dog capable of working in adverse conditions. The first specimens were created by crossing local Shepherd Dogs with other breeds imported by the German and Austrian armies. Over time, this breed was perfected to perform various tasks such as herding, guarding and hunting.
As with other breeds, World War II was responsible for the significant reduction in the number of the breed. Extinction did not happen thanks to the work of dedicated breeders who took care of preserving and promoting the breed. Today, the Bohemian Shepherd Dog is mainly used as a working dog, but has also gained popularity as a faithful and devoted companion in the home. However, it is still a little known breed outside its region of origin.
