Breed history in brief
The history of the German Hound has its roots several centuries ago in Germany, where it has played an essential role in hunting. Originally, Germany was home to several varieties of Hounds (Bracken), but over time, only the Westphalian Bracke survived. The Westphalian region was also home to the "Sauerland Holzbracke", a small tricolor hound, which was crossed with the local "Steinbracken". This mixture gave rise to a unique type of hound known as the German Hound since 1900. The official recognition of the breed by the United Kennel Club in 1996 highlights its importance and prestige in the field of hunting.
Breed characteristics
The constitution of the German Hound is strong, but elegant and light in hunting. Its limbs are long and its back shows a slight curvature. The head is long and narrow, with dark eyes with a kind expression. Its ears are long, falling close to the head and with rounded tips. The tail is long, covered with hair and can be carried hanging or slightly curved upwards. The coat is relatively long, dense and harsh, with especially dense thighs that form "pants". Coloration varies from red to yellow with a black coat pattern and white patches around the neck, muzzle, chest, limbs and tip of the tail. The German Hound is a very active, persistent working dog with an excellent sense of smell and orientation. Despite its hunting nature, it is an affectionate and family friendly dog.
Common health problems
The German Hound breed is generally in good health, although it can be susceptible to certain disorders common in dogs, such as hip dysplasia, dermatitis or eye problems.
