Breed history in brief

Basenji is a breed originating in Central Africa, where it was bred to hunt small animals such as squirrels and birds. In some cases, it also acted as a guard dog. Basenji is one of the oldest breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The breed was introduced to the Western world in the late 19th century, and gained great popularity in Europe and the United States. Today, in some parts of Africa, Basenji are still used for hunting, but they are also considered good pets because of their affectionate nature and low grooming requirements.

Breed characteristics

The Basenji breed shows an aristocratic appearance. A large number of fine wrinkles are seen on the forehead when the dog pricks up its ears. The wrinkles are more predominant in puppies. In addition, the eyes are dark, almond-shaped and oblique, while the ears are small, erect and pointed. The tail is set high, curled and tight on the back. The breed's coat is short, fine and smooth and shiny in texture. The coloring can be black, red, brindle or tricolor, as well as white patches on the chest, legs and tip of the tail. Dogs of this breed are characterized by being intelligent and affectionate, although they can be reserved with strangers. Even so, it is an independent and alert dog. One of their unique characteristics is that, like cats, they groom themselves, so their coat requires minimal grooming. They are also known for their distinctive chirp-like vocalizations.

Common health problems

The breed is generally healthy if kept active, but can still be prone to certain health problems such as cataracts, corneal dystrophy, Fanconi syndrome, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, pyruvate kinase deficiency, retinal dysplasia, persistent pupillary membrane and immunoproliferative enteropathy.
