Breed history in brief
The origin of the Australian Shepherd Stumpy Tail goes back to the 19th century in Australia, as its name suggests. The breed was created by crossing the English Smithfield type dog with the Australian Dingo and the Blue Merle Shorthaired Collie. This breed was bred with a focus on working ability rather than appearance.
In the 1960s the breed was on the verge of extinction. However, in 1988 the Australian National Kennel Council recognized the breed and assisted in its promotion and preservation. Today, the breed remains an excellent herding dog for cattle and other livestock, although it has also been used for hunting and as a family companion for its loyalty and intelligence.
Breed characteristics
Australian Shepherd Stumpy Tail is a rough looking breed. The back is level and the loin is deep and strong. The limbs are powerful and straight. The eyes are medium sized, oval shaped and dark brown in color, as well as, the ears are small, erect and slightly pointed. The tail is naturally short and high set.
The coat is short, smooth and dense. The undercoat is soft unlike the outer coat which has a harsh texture. The hair around the neck is longer than the rest of the body, reminiscent of a ruff. The color of the coat may be blue, mottled blue or mottled red. They may show small dark markings.
The breed has a notorious predisposition to work along with a great devotion and loyalty to its owner. It is a dog that can act as a guardian due to its protective and alert nature. In addition, they are characterized by being very active and energetic, requiring adequate mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy.

There are no details in some databases (such as the OFA Canine Health Information Center) on the most common disorders in this breed. Still, the breed is reported to be prone to some of the most common diseases in dogs such as hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, congenital deafness, cataracts and patellar luxation.
