Breed history in brief

The development of the Artesian Basset of Normandy dates back to the 1870s, when the controlled breeding of the French Shorthair Basset began. Initially, the breeders Le Couteulx de Canteleu and Louis Lane, opted for different approaches in the creation of this breed. While Le Couteulx de Canteleu was dedicated to obtaining a utilitarian type, with straight forelimbs (known as the Basset d'Artois), Louis Lane prioritized physical appearance by developing crooked forelimbs (the Basset de Normandie). However, in 1924 it was decided to combine the two breeds under the name of the Artesian Basset of Normandy. Despite efforts to maintain the essence of the breed, some critics have noted a possible loss of stamina and the typical bark characteristic of the hound. However, committed breeders continue to work to preserve the hunting instincts of this breed.

Breed characteristics

The Artesian Basset of Normandy is a compact and elongated dog. Its head recalls the nobility of the Normandy dog, with a domed skull. Its eyes, large and serene looking, are dark and oval, while its ears are extremely long, thin and usually end in a point. The neck is long, with a soft dewlap, and the tail, also long, tapers towards the tip, maintaining a sabre shape. The forelegs are short, robust and slightly arched, while the hind legs follow a vertical line. Their coat, short and tight, can exhibit bicolor (fawn and white) or tricolor (fawn with black and white mantle) coloration. As for their temperament, they are loyal, docile and affectionate, making them ideal companions for the family. In addition, they stand out for their keen sense of smell and their tenacity in tracking. The Normandy Artesian Basset is distinguished by its intelligence and energy.

Common health problems
