DNA Breed Test

What breed is my cat? Find out, finally, with Koko Genetics.

Discover everything about your cat’s breeds! At Koko, we have a vast catalog of documented breeds so you can learn about your pet’s origins.

Calling the cat a pet could open up an entire debate. Sometimes, it seems more like an animal that has become very accustomed to living with us, but following its own style and independence. It is believed that the first wild cats were attracted to human settlements by the presence of rodents, especially the common mouse, and developed a symbiotic relationship with our ancestors.
However, their greatest impact in the past was, without a doubt, in Ancient Egypt. As early as 3100 BC, they were revered and depicted in various forms of art. Later, the Greeks took charge of spreading them to multiple regions. And throughout all those years, the species barely changed. Your cat is a fossil.
Cat breeds began to emerge in the mid-19th century. During their development, specific mutations arose that differentiated them from one another and from the genome of the original cat. Thanks to the combination of advances in genetics and technology, at Koko Genetics, we offer you an economical and simple way to discover these genetic changes. All while staying at the forefront of science to provide you with the best cat breed DNA test service and support.

How do we know the breed of your cat?

breeds

To determine the breed, our cat DNA test analyzes the genetic variants that occur in the autosomal region of DNA, commonly known as SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms). SNPs are highly practical genetic markers for establishing your pet's breed, as each group has unique genetic variants.

Once we have the sample and verify its quality, we proceed with the analysis. The key lies in comparing the SNPs present in your pet with a vast database that includes thousands of reference cats belonging to 40 different cat breeds. Yes, there are dozens of cat breeds—it’s as surprising as it sounds.
As a result of this entire process, we provide you with a comprehensive report detailing your cat’s breeds, expressed in percentages, thanks to the combination of its genetic markers and those previously recorded in multiple studies and research.
Knowing your cat’s breed is more useful than just satisfying curiosity or being proud that your pet is a true British gentleman. Many cat breeds have different predispositions to diseases compared to other cats. Knowing your friend’s breeds gives you greater control over their health.
Another point is learning more about your cat’s habits. Siamese and Abyssinian cats are true balls of love and affection. However, Russian Blues are more independent and will not easily approach a stranger. If you have a British Shorthair, you will notice that its hunting instinct is very active and it loves toys that resemble prey. Although each cat then develops its own personality!

Family tree

In our results, we also offer your cat's family tree. By analyzing your cat's genetic material, we can uncover its lineage and ancestors. We will tell you the breeds of its parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents in a tree so detailed that your cat would probably try to climb it if it were physical.

We will present you with between one and four breeds of each of your pet’s ancestors. This way, you will not only know your friend’s breeds but also the breeds that led to this point. A glimpse into the past, courtesy of the genes of the present.
