Breed history in brief

The Turkish Angora is one of the oldest cat breeds. This breed originates from the Caucasus. During the 16th century, the sultans of the Ottoman Empire sent them to France and England as gifts, allowing more records of this cat to emerge. Their distinguished appearance and calm demeanor made them popular among the nobility. Over the years, the Persian cat was displaced and almost disappeared, except that Turkey considered it a national treasure and housed individuals of this breed in the zoos of Ankara and Istanbul. In 1950, animals were imported from Turkey to the United States, where breeding projects succeeded in recovering the breed.

Breed characteristics

They are a striking cat, with long legs and a cuneiform skull and small size. They usually move with their tail, which is long and thickly furred, erect and perpendicular to the rest of the body. The eyes can be of any hue, and present heterochromia. The most striking feature is their semi-long or long coat, silky to the touch. They have no undercoat and are easy to care for. Although the characteristic color is white, black and reddish are also recognized, including their variants. Spotted and tabby patterns are accepted as long as they are of the officially recognized shades. They are intelligent cats, which need mental stimulation. Added to the fact that they are sociable animals, makes them a breed that requires a lot of attention. However, they are calm and cheerful, so they are recommended for first timers.

Common health problems

The gene responsible for the white color and blue eyes can also cause deafness in this breed. In addition, autosomal recessive ataxia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are common in this breed.
