The Peterbald is a very recent breed of cat that belongs to the group of hairless cats, characterized by the absence of fur or by having a very short and soft fur. They arose from the cross between a Sphinx cat and a short-haired Oriental. They are known for their active and extroverted nature, as well as being affectionate and loyal.
General details
Peterbald cats are medium-sized, with males typically weighing between 3.5 and 5.5 kilograms and females between 2.5 and 4 kilograms. They are approximately 25 to 35 centimeters tall and have a body length of about 30 to 40 centimeters. Under normal conditions, they can live between 10 and 15 years. This breed is recognized by associations such as the International Cat Association (TICA) or others, such as the FiFé, have it provisionally registered.
Breed history in brief
The Peterbald has its origins in Russia, where it was developed in 1994 in St. Petersburg. The breed began with a breeding experiment between a Don Sphynx and a short-haired Oriental. The result was a litter of four kittens with the characteristic lack of fur, which are considered the founders of this breed. Since then, the Peterbald has been refined through selective breeding, seeking a cat similar to the Sphynx, but with a more Oriental appearance. For this purpose, crossbreeding with Siamese and Burmese cats has been allowed. The breed was officially recognized by several cat associations in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Breed characteristics
The Peterbald is a medium-sized breed with a lean, muscular body. Their eyes are large, almond-shaped and can be any color, giving them an intelligent and alert expression. The ears are large and pointed, accentuating their elegant appearance, with a slender head in proportion to the body. The Peterbald`s fur is soft and warm to the touch, and can range from completely bare to having a very short, fine coat (these cats lack the gene responsible for baldness). Some Peterbald may have a "brush" coat that is stiffer and feels like a brush texture. Skin or coat colors and patterns can vary widely. Peterbalds are known to be calm and affectionate cats. They enjoy human companionship, are trusting and get along well with other pets, including dogs. It is a breed recommended for apartments and families with children.
Common health problems
The Peterbald is generally a healthy breed, but due to the lack of coat, they can be more susceptible to skin problems and need protection from the cold and sun.
