Persian cat

The Persian is one of the oldest and most popular cat breeds in the world, known for its long, silky coat, large head in proportion to the body and flat face. Known for their calm and affectionate temperament, Persians are cats that enjoy indoor life and form strong bonds with their owners. They are relaxed and serene animals, ideal for families and seniors.

General details

Persian cats are medium to large in size, with males typically weighing between 4 and 7 kilograms and females between 3 and 5 kilograms. They are approximately 25 to 30 centimeters tall and have a body length of about 35 to 45 centimeters, not counting the tail. Under normal conditions, they can live between 12 and 17 years. This breed is recognized by associations such as the International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA).

Breed history in brief

The Persian cat was originally considered to have its origins in Persia (present-day Iran), where these cats were said to have been prized for their beauty and temperament for centuries. This theory considered that they were introduced in Europe in the 17th century, gaining popularity. However, genetic studies of today`s Persian cats have shown that they originated in Western Europe. It is likely that the ancestor of Persian cats are the long-haired cats of the Russian region, which would later be crossed with other breeds. Over the years, Persians have undergone intensive selective breeding that has refined their distinctive appearance and docile temperament. The breed was officially recognized by several cat associations in the 19th century and has remained one of the most beloved breeds worldwide.

Breed characteristics

The Persian is a medium to large breed with a robust, muscular body and short, strong legs. Their eyes are large, round and can be of various colors, including blue, green, copper and hazel, giving them a sweet, open expression. The ears are small, with rounded tips, and are set low on the head, accentuating their distinctive appearance. The face is flat, with a short, broad nose. The head is large in proportion to the body. The Persian`s coat is long, dense and silky, requiring constant care to keep it in good condition. They have a dense undercoat. Coat colors and patterns are varied, making each cat unique, although bicolors and tricolors are most popular. Persians are known for their calm and affectionate temperament. They enjoy human companionship and get along well with other pets. They are cats that prefer a quiet, stable environment, and although they are playful, they are not as active as other breeds.

Common health problems

Among the most common diseases are respiratory problems, due to their short nose, and eye problems, such as entropion and corneal ulcers. The flat face and head shape predispose to dental disease. They may also be prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
