Breed history in brief
The Norwegian Forest Cat has its origins in the forests of Norway, where it has lived for centuries. The breed is believed to have originated from the British Shorthair cats that accompanied the Vikings on their travels and have been mentioned in Norse mythology. These would have also interbred with the long-haired cats carried by the Crusaders during the 14th century. The resulting cats adapted to the region`s climate of very cold winters. The breed was formally recognized in Norway in the 1930s, and breeders began a selective breeding program to preserve its unique characteristics. In the 1950s it was declared the official cat breed of Norway. The Norwegian Forest Cat was not officially recognized by the cat associations until the 1970s, as the breed was not exported outside Norway and they could not register it.
Breed characteristics
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large breed with a muscular and robust body. Their eyes are large, almond-shaped and can be of various colors, giving them an alert and lively expression. The ears are large, with tufts of fur on the tips, similar to those of a lynx, accentuating their wild appearance. The Norwegian Forest Cat`s coat is long, dense and water-resistant, with a thick undercoat for thermal insulation and an oily, water-repellent outer coat. Coat colors and patterns are varied, making each cat unique. They can be any color except chocolate, lilac or the Siamese pattern, although orange is the most common. Norwegian Forest Cats are known for their calm and affectionate temperament. They enjoy human companionship and get along well with other pets. They are active, playful cats that enjoy exploring their environment and engaging in interactive play.
Common health problems
The Norwegian Forest Cat is generally a healthy breed, yet they are predisposed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, glycogen storage disease type IV and pyruvate kinase deficiency.
