LaPerm

The LaPerm is a recent domestic cat breed known for its distinctive curly coat, which can be either short or long. This unique trait is the result of a natural genetic mutation. Its name comes from there, "the perm". LaPerms are friendly and affectionate cats, docile and gentle.

General details

LaPerm cats are medium-sized, with males typically weighing between 4 and 5 kilograms and females between 3 and 4 kilograms. They are approximately 15 to 20 centimeters tall and have a body length of about 30 to 41 centimeters. Under normal conditions, they can live between 10 and 15 years. This breed is recognized by associations such as the International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA).

Breed history in brief

The LaPerm is a relatively new breed, developed in the United States in 1986. The breed began with a cat named Curly, who was born bald and at eight weeks old grew curly fur due to a natural genetic mutation. Also, unlike her siblings, she was more of a homebody and preferred the company of humans. Her offspring also inherited the curly coat and personality. Linda Koehl, Curly`s owner, began a selective breeding program to develop and stabilize the breed. The breed was officially recognized by TICA in 2004.

Breed characteristics

The LaPerm is a medium-sized breed with a muscular and well-proportioned body. Its eyes are large, almond-shaped and can be of various colors. The ears are medium to large in size, with rounded tips and often tufted. The LaPerm`s coat is curly, soft and silky, with more pronounced curls on the neck, the base of the ears and the tail, which is bushy. Unlike other curly-haired breeds, the coat can be either short or long. Colors and patterns are varied, and all combinations are acceptable. LaPerms are known for their active and playful, yet quiet temperament. They enjoy human companionship and get along well with other pets. They are not a breed that handles solitude well. They are intelligent and curious cats, always exploring their environment and engaging in interactive play.

Common health problems

The LaPerm is generally a healthy breed, with no predisposition to specific genetic diseases. Being a recent breed, they have not yet been found to have their own pathologies, but have those common to cats.
