Breed history in brief
The Korat has its origins in Thailand, where it has been revered for centuries and is called Si-Sawat, meaning "good luck". It is believed that this breed was first mentioned in an ancient Thai book of cat poems called "Tamra Maew", dating back to the 14th century. In Thailand, Korats are considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity, and were traditionally given as gifts to newly married couples. Part of the tradition is that you should not buy it, but it has to be a gift. There are theories that animals of this breed may have arrived in other regions of the world confused with the blue Siamese. The breed was introduced in the United States in the 1950s, although it was crossed with bluepoint Siamese cats to avoid inbreeding. The Korat was officially recognized by the CFA in 1966.
Breed characteristics
The Korat is a medium-sized breed with a muscular and well-proportioned body. Its head is said to be heart-shaped. Their eyes are large, round and bright green. They are born with blue eyes, turning amber as they grow, and do not reach green until adulthood. The ears are large, with slightly rounded tips, and are set wide apart on the head. The Korat`s coat is short, soft and of a distinctive silvery-blue color, with a silky texture and a sheen that gives them a lustrous appearance. They are one of the few cat breeds that only have a single color. They enjoy human companionship and get along well with other pets. Despite their energy, they are very dependent on their owners and seek their attention and affection.
Common health problems
The Korat is generally a healthy breed, but can be prone to some hereditary conditions. Among the most common diseases are GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis.
