Birman cat

The Burmese, originally from Burma, is known for its elegant appearance and affectionate temperament. They are noted for their fur and intense blue eyes. Their color pattern is pointed, with an arrangement of white gloves on the paws. Birmans are affectionate and sociable.

General details

The Birman cat breed usually weighs between 4.5 and 6 kilograms in males, and between 3.5 and 4 kilograms in the case of females. They have a length of 46 to 56 centimeters, excluding the tail, and a height between 25 and 30 centimeters. Their life expectancy varies between 12 and 16 years, although they can reach up to 20 years. This breed is recognized by associations such as the International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA).

Breed history in brief

The Burmese cat has its origins in Burma (present-day Myanmar, Asia). According to legend, these cats were considered sacred and lived in temples as companions to the priests. The breed arrived in Europe in the 1920s, when a couple of cats were brought to France. Selective breeding began there in 1925 and the International Cat Federation (FIFé) recognized the breed in 1964. Today, the Birman is a popular breed, prized for its affectionate nature.

Breed characteristics

The Birman cat has a robust and well-proportioned body, of medium size. Its legs are strong and of medium length, with slightly longer hind legs. The head is broad and rounded, with high cheekbones and a convex profile. The eyes are large, round and deep blue, giving them a sweet expression. The ears are medium-sized, with a wide base and rounded tips. The tail is of medium length, bushy and well proportioned. The Birman`s coat is silky, soft and of medium length, without a dense undercoat, making it easy to maintain. They have a pointed color pattern, with darker limbs and a lighter body. Characteristically, they have white "gloves" on the front legs and white "boots" on the hind legs. They are affectionate and social cats, who enjoy the company of their owners and get along well with other animals and children.

Common health problems

Birman cats, although generally healthy, can be prone to certain common diseases. Some of the most common are: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hypomyelination, polycystic kidney disease, allergic dermatitis, gastrointestinal disorders and pyruvate kinase deficiency.
